Renouncing RA Citizenship

A person may renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia based on his or her own decision.
If the person is 18 years of age or older, he or she shall personally visit the Department for Citizenship Granting of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, located at 17/10, 4th District, Davtashen, Yerevan. An appointment shall be booked in advance via the migration-e.gov.am website or the EarlyOne mobile application.

The service is available in person and requires a prior appointment.

When booking, it is necessary to provide the details of the individual who will personally come to the appointment. Each visitor, regardless of age, shall have a separate appointment. Notably, persons over the age of 75 are served on a walk-in basis (“live queue” format).

 To Book an appointment online, you shall:

  • Visit the migration.e-gov.am platform, select the section “Submission of Application for Acquisition or Termination of Citizenship,” and book an appointment.
  • After authentication, fill in the required information (the first and last name shall be entered exactly as written in the passport) and click the “Next Page” button.
  •  On the next page, enter your email address and phone number, then enter the code sent to your email.
  • In the “Book an Appointment” section of the following page, select the address: 17/10, 4th District, Davtashen (Department for Citizenship Granting).
  • Enter the details of the person for whom the application is being submitted.
  • In the “Select Date and Time” window, choose the most convenient option from the available dates and times.

If using the EarlyOne mobile application, open the “Government” section, select “Migration and Citizenship Service,” then from the branches choose Department for Citizenship After that, select the “Application for citizenship/termination pf citizenship” subsection and fill in the required information in the appropriate order.

Note

The appointment request is considered confirmed only if you have received a corresponding notification at your email address.

Required documents 

Persons over the age of 18 who wish to renounce RA citizenship shall submit the following documents:

  • application form;
  • valid passport of RA citizen and the carbon copy thereof;
  • birth certificate and the carbon copy thereof;
  • six photos (colored) measuring 35 mm x 45 mm;
  • marriage certificate and the carbon copy thereof (if the person is married); 
  • applicant’s child’s birth certificate and the carbon copy thereof;
  • military ID (for male citizens subject to military service);
  • if the applicant holds citizenship of another country – a valid passport issued by the competent authority of that country;
  • if the applicant does not hold citizenship of another country – a written confirmation (certificate) issued by the competent authority of a foreign state regarding the legal possibility of acquiring citizenship of that country
  • document attesting the payment of relevant state duty.

If the applicant has made changes to personal data in accordance with the established procedure, and there is a discrepancy between the entries in the documents required under points 2 and 3 of the list, a document confirming the change shall also be submitted.

Documents drawn up in a foreign language shall be submitted with a notarized translation into Armenian language.

Note

If the applicant is under the age of 18, the application for renouncing RA citizenship shall be submitted by the parent.

A citizen under the age of 18 may change his or her citizenship of the Republic of Armenia (in the case of renunciation of citizenship by one or both parents) based on the grounds and procedure defined by Article 17 of the Law.

Documents Required for Renouncing RA Citizenship for Children Under 18:

  • application form;

  • valid RA passport of the child and the carbon copy thereof;
  • valid passport of the applying parent and the carbon copy thereof;
  • document confirming that the parent’s RA citizenship has been renounced;
  • six photos (colored) measuring 35 mm x 45 mm;
  • marriage certificate, certificate of paternity recognition, or a document confirming single motherhood, and the carbon copy thereof;
  • child’s birth certificate and the carbon copy thereof;
  • consent of the other parent and a carbon copy of his or her identity document, if one of the parents is a citizen of the Republic of Armenia. If the parent is unable to provide consent in person at the Service, embassy, or consulate, a legally certified Armenian translation of the consent shall be submitted;
  • if the child holds citizenship of another state – a valid passport issued by the competent authority of that state;
  • if the child does not hold citizenship of another state – a written confirmation (certificate) issued by the competent authority of the foreign state on the legal possibility of acquiring its citizenship, along with a legally certified Armenian translation;
  • for children aged 14 to 18 – a written consent from the child to renounce RA citizenship. If the child is unable to come in person at the Service, embassy, or consulate, a legally certified Armenian translation of the consent shall be submitted;
  • if there are changes in personal data in the submitted documents – a document confirming the changes
  • document attesting the payment of relevant state duty.

Documents drawn up in a foreign language shall be submitted with a notarized translation into Armenian language.

 Service Fee and Payment Procedure

When applying for RA citizenship, a fee of AMD 25,000 shall be paid.

Payment can be made on site via payment terminal, online, or at any bank in Armenia by transferring the amount to account number 900005160529.

Note

Amendments to the RA Law on State Duty made on 22 January 22, 2025, provide that, starting from September 1, 2025, the state duty for acquiring RA citizenship will amount to AMD 150,000.

Citizenship granting Time and Procedure

The application is reviewed within 6 months after submission. Once the application for renouncing RA citizenship is submitted, the applicant receives a personal tracking code via SMS (linked to the application number) or by email, which can be used to monitor the status of the application.

If the application for renouncing RA citizenship is approved, the applicant is notified via SMS or email. Following this, he or she shall personally, or through an authorized representative (no notarization of the power of attorney is required), apply to the Citizenship Granting Division to acquire a certificate confirming the termination of RA citizenship, by presenting all identity documents issued by the Republic of Armenia.

Processing Time

The process of terminating RA citizenship takes 6 months.
